While there are numerous versions of Poker (and it seems that every day
somebody is developing a new twist on the game), in essence it is as simple as
5-Card Draw. So we use that game to explain the principles.
All 52 cards in the playing card pack are used and Aces score highest,
followed by King, Queen and Jack. The game is played according to card suits,
with every suit having equal value. Each player gets 5 cards, with the dealer
handing out one card to all players every round. Winning hands are determined in
this order:
Ranking order
Royal Flush - You need to get the highest sequence in the
same suit, from Ace to 10. Obviously this is the hardest to get.
Straight Flush - Next down the difficulty list, this is a
sequence in the same suite, but with cards lower than Royal Flush.
Four of a Kind - Simply, four of the same cards, one from
each suit. Top hand is 4 Aces.
Full House - Three-two combination i.e. three of a kind and
two of a kind.
Flush - Five cards from the same suit that do not have to be
sequential.
Straight - Five cards in numerical sequence, without regard
to suit of cards.
Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same value.
Two Pairs - Two sets of cards, each with two of a kind.
One Pair - One set of cards of the same kind
High Card - Highest ranking card, if nobody has a better
hand.
Basic Rules
1) You start by contributing money into a central pot. When everyone
has paid, the dealer distributes the cards.
2) Arrange your cards according to the ranking rules. Decide how many
cards you want to exchange (up to 3).
3) Place your bets like this:
Open: to start the betting process.
Check : to let somebody else
'Open'.
See : Place the same amount in the pot as other players to
stay in the game.
Raise : Increasing the betting stakes – paying more into the
pot than the others.
Fold : Quitting the game if you have a weak hand. You lose
your initial stake.
4) After everyone gets the first hand of 5 cards and after the first
round of bets, you can exchange up to 3 cards. All cards are passed face down.
5) The playing with the highest ranking cards collects the pot.
